Why would anyone want to invent an INTRAnet

1. It adds structure and coherence to what has often been a topsy-like process of expansion.

2. Individual purchases can be tested in the context of the INTRAnet--one can ask how a purchase supports or conflicts with the global model. For instance: the question `should students purchase their own computers?' is more easily answered when the uses of those computers can be specified.

3. Defining the whole and the domains allows assigning priorities, staff, resources, etc. to a coherent structure.

4. Given that the academic domain is designed and executed well, an institution can advertise its INTRAnet as an attractive academic attribute in its quest for students.

5. By adapting INTERnet tools, an institution can save some first costs in building an effective INTRAnet.

6. Faculty and others can make many instructional materials available with rather minimal training, and without excessive preparation time. This situation will become even better over time. Images and sound and brief film clips are easily incorporated. Interactive lessons are harder.
